Online Communications Internship

Posted on April 11th, 2012

Timeframe: Summer into Fall semester (flexible)

Workload: 10-15 hours per week, minimum of 150 hours total.

Students will need to have completed either JTC 326 (Online Writing and Information) or JTC 373 (Digital Promotion Management) to be successful in this internship. If you have real-world experience related to these courses but have not yet completed JTC 326 or 373, work samples will be accepted in lieu of coursework.

The ideal intern will be an excellent online communicator and have working knowledge of online norms and practices. We will provide specific training and guidance related to your tasks, but you must come into the internship as an exceptional writer.

Responsibilities will be divided into three main areas:

Online written material

  • Contributing to one of our blog properties
  • Contributing to our e-mail newsletter
  • Devising editorial calendars
  • Content analysis; suggesting and writing new content for one of our websites
  • Maintaining existing content – purging, rewriting for clarity or writing for SEO potential

Online advertising

  • Writing ad content for Google Adwords and Facebook Ads
  • Monitoring and revising ad copy through the lifecycle of the ad.
  • Evaluating ad performance and adjusting ad spend where applicable.

Social media interaction

  • Communicating through Twitter and Facebook as a business entity
  • Responding to customers and clients
  • Seeking out connections to other social accounts

These three areas provide a broad experience for the intern, from which they will acquire real-world skills in a business environment.

In addition to direct supervision, the intern will receive qualitative and quantitative feedback throughout the course of the internship. We expect the intern to grow and become more proficient in their responsibilities as the program progresses.

Please email your resume, transcript (unofficial is fine), cover letter, and 3-5 examples of your best work to Please, no walk-ins. Deadline to apply is Friday, April 20.
