Marketing Coordinator – CSU men’s lacrosse

Colorado State University men’s lacrosse is seeking one to two marketing/journalism interns for the 2014/2015 school year. CSU men’s lacrosse has been in existence since 1964 and currently competes in the Men’s Collegiate Lacrosse Association (MCLA), a national organization of over 200 teams.

The team has had unparalleled success at the MCLA level, winning national championships in 1999, 2001, 2003, 2006, 2012 and 2013. CSU lacrosse also has won multiple conference championships as well (2000, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2006, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013).

CSU lacrosse competes as a member of CSU’s popular and successful Sport Club department. Despite their non-varsity status, the Rams are very well-known in the lacrosse world, where they have been written about in magazines, mentioned on television and been featured in marketing materials for lacrosse-related merchandise.

The primary goals and objectives for the intern(s) in this position will be to maintain general awareness and public relations for the program, which includes fostering positive relationships with alumni, families, contacts, the local lacrosse community and the CSU community at large.
In addition to regular marketing tasks like social media, game-day materials, game reports and press releases, there are several major events that the intern(s) will publicize. These include the team’s annual golf tournament, alumni game, Hall of Fame event and the Rocky Mountain Lacrosse Showdown.

To be considered for the position, applicants will:
- Possess excellent writing and communications skills, including use of AP style
- Have sports-related knowledge or expertise – or a desire to enter the field of sports marketing
- Be able to work in or learn a variety of software, including Adobe In Design, Microsoft Office, Word Press and several custom content management systems
- Have extensive working experience in all major social media platforms
- Be a positive asset to the CSU men’s lacrosse program and have the ability to foster multiple cross-functional relationships with a variety of stakeholders

Additional qualifications that will be considered:
- Completed Integrated Marketing Communication
- Digital Marketing

The intern(s) in this position will be expected to:
- Market and publicize all team events (outlined above)
- Manage the team’s social media platforms
- Maintain the team’s website, including uploading statistics and stories
- Compile and submit game reports and press releases to the appropriate media outlets
- Collaborate with the University’s graphics department to create printed materials, including game day brochures, team posters and event publications
- Focus on the Rocky Mountain Lacrosse Showdown as a keystone project
- Create communications and marketing plans, including stakeholders, goals, tactics and measurables

Monetary compensation for this position is currently under review and will be commensurate with experience. The intern(s) will be able to travel with the team and will receive various items of team gear.

The intern(s) will be supervised by head coach Alex Smith, who is also a Publicity and Marketing Specialist with Fort Collins Utilities. While there is a strong degree of independent work associated with the position, the supervisor will help review plans, tactics and content before submittal and will supply appropriate mentorship and training when needed.

The student who is selected for this internship will be presented with a very unique opportunity to gain experience in the world of sports marketing. Lacrosse is a booming sport in Colorado and across the country and the materials created during the internship has the potential to be very wide-reaching and high-profile. The student will also gain valuable experience working under a qualified supervisor who will provide a glimpse into the real-world application of communications and marketing support. This internship will be a very strong resume builder and provide a strong networking opportunity.
