Fire Department Communications Intern

Posted on October 25th, 2017

Enjoy working outside the office? Like telling stories and helping people better understand the world around them? Interested in learning more about firefighters and the work they do to serve our community? Then you’ll love working on the Public Affairs and Communication team at Poudre Fire Authority.

Poudre Fire Authority serves the people of Fort Collins, Laporte, Timnath, Bellvue and surrounding communities within a 235-square-mile area. A person in this internship position would work with the Public Affairs and Communication Manager to help tell PFA’s story by taking people behind the scenes through photography, video, social media and more. Now, more than ever, government organizations need to be forward and transparent about their work, and they need to translate government-speak to help people understand the vital role these organizations’ play in people’s daily lives.

A successful internship candidate will have skills in the following areas:

- Photography (mobile/DSLR)
- Videography (shooting/editing)
- Writing/AP style
- Social media
- Design

A PFA communications intern will build these skills through a variety of tasks, including but not limited to:

- Creating content for PFA’s branded social media accounts.
- Grow audiences across platforms.
- Exposure to government services and related communications plan.
- Some incident response, in partnership with PFA’s lead public information officers.
- Fire- and life-safety education opportunities, as they intersect with PFA’s communications.
- Events planning, execution and promotion.

Candidates should submit a one-page resume with references, as well as a variety of clips that showcase their storytelling skills. (Links to digital projects are preferred over those submitted on a flashdrive.)

Candidates should email application materials to Poudre Fire Authority Public Affairs and Communication Manager Madeline Noblett at mnoblett@poudre-fire.org.

Those with questions may contact Madeline by email or at 970-219-5930.
