College of Health and Human Sciences Communications Assistant

The College of Health and Human Sciences Dean’s Office is seeking a dynamic individual to help us get the word out to our constituents about the exciting work being done in our College. This is a hands-on, real-world opportunity to help drive our communications strategies at multiple levels. Position is 15-20 hours per week and begins May 2015.

Writing: Conduct interviews, write, and edit the following: web stories, newsletter articles, and news releases including alumni, faculty, and student profiles. Assist with writing for various College and Department publications.

Photography: Take photos with the office camera at College events for social media channels. Take photos to accompany news stories.

Social Media: Assist in developing College social media campaigns. Draft social media posts for the College’s Facebook and twitter accounts. Manage content for the College’s Pinterest Board. Post photos to College Flickr.

Web: Update College websites with current news and events postings.

Requested Skills, Experience, and Qualifications:

1. Excellent verbal and written communication skills with knowledge of AP Style and outstanding editing skills

2. Experience working in a journalism or communications environment preferred

3. Highly organized, detail-oriented, flexible self-starter

4. Proficiency in MS Word and Outlook email and calendar

5. Proficiency in social media platforms including Facebook, Flickr, LinkedIn, Twitter, and Pinterest

6. Ability to maintain confidentiality

7. Must be able to manage multiple assignments, set priorities, and meet short deadlines

8. Demonstrate ability to work effectively as a team member and as a well-informed, articulate representative of the University/College

9. Photography skills a plus

10. Work schedule 15-20 hours per week, of 3-4 hours daily, Monday – Friday, preferred, availability in summer preferred with opportunity to continue for the 2015-16 academic year, May start date preferred, but flexible, opportunity for course credit

11. Work-Study preferred. Successful candidates without an award will be asked to apply for Merit Work-Study.

12. Willingness to work weekend/evening hours when requested (minimal)

This position pays $10.31 per hour.
