Internship opening: American Cowboy magazine unpaid, full-time editorial internship

Internship description: American Cowboy interns are introduced to the full-magazine experience working with a small staff of experienced editors in a hands-on environment. Interns will have the chance to write stories of a variety of lengths on Western lifestyle, travel, history and gear, while putting together online packages and reader service material. Qualified interns can expect to hit the ground running, learning the ins-and-outs of the Western industry by making extensive contacts with historians, true-blue cowboys, Western apparel companies and a variety of craftsmen and Western experts. Each day will bring new challenges and new assignments, and interns will work closely with the editors to truly grow as well rounded magazine journalists. Our company, Active Interest Media, owns many of the large equine titles, including EQUUS, Horse&Rider, Dressage Today, The Trail Rider, and Spin To Win Rodeo. You will have the chance to help out across the Equine Network (the equine division of Active Interest Media.) Some of editors also work on Spin To Win Rodeo, and if you are interested, you’ll have the opportunity to help that team as well.

About American Cowboy: American Cowboy celebrates the past and the present of the West with content about lifestyle, travel, culture, and great all highlighted with gorgeous photography. Our readers are wild for the romance and drama of all things Western, devouring stories about the past as eagerly as tales about today’s wranglers¬–of cattle and couture. Our affluent audience loves to express their cowboy spirit through all aspects of their life, from homes to heels to horses.

Internship qualifications: Juniors or seniors with strong writing abilities and ability to pick up the phone and make things happen. Copy writing skills are a must, knowledge of the Western industry (or horseback experience) is a plus but not required, as we can break you in quickly. Willingness to help wherever you are needed is an absolute must, as we are all jacks-of-all-trades.

Big bonuses: Our office is located in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains in beautiful Boulder, Colo. Boulder has abundant student housing, with the University of Colorado located on the southwest side of town. Boulder overflows with culture and offers dozens of breweries and great dining and nightlife. Spend nights and weekends hiking through the Rockies and experiencing all the beauty the West has to offer. On the other hand, you’ll be introduced to cowboy lifestyles and will have the opportunity to learn all about the Western way of life and Cowboy Code.

To apply: Send cover letters and resumes to Editor-in-Chief Philip Armour, by Oct. 1, 2011 for Winter 2012 opening. Please send any pre-application questions to Chelsea Toy,
